Britain's population registered the biggest European annual growth rate for the past year, making it the continent's third-largest country after Germany and France, the statistics office said on Thursday, according to dpa. The population stands at 63.7 million, after growth of 419,000 in the year to the end of June 2013, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said. This compared with growth of 319,100 in France to 65,480,500, and 166,200 in Germany to 80,399,300 over the same period, the ONS said. The growth was fueled by the biggest baby boom since 1972: 813,200 births and 558,800 deaths were recorded during that period. Of the newborn babies, 25.9 per cent had a foreign-born mother, compared with one in six mothers 10 years ago.
