Malawi-born Cate Campbell on Friday won gold in the women's 100m freestyle event at the world championships, while American teenager Missy Franklin missed out on a gold for the first time at the competition, dpa reported. Campbell, who lives in and swims for Australia won in a time of 52.34, beating Sweden's Sarah Sjostrom by 0.55 seconds. Bronze went to Dutchwoman Ranomi Kromowidjojo. Campbell had earlier won silver in the 4x100m relay at the 15th FINA world championships, while Sjostrom had taken gold in the women's 100m butterfly. Franklin, who has already picked up four gold medals in Barcelona, finished fourth in a time of 53.47. The stand-out performance of the evening though belonged to American Ryan Lochte, who won two gold medals and secured the fastest time from his semi-final. He first secured a third 200m backstroke world championship title as he won in 1:53.79. It was his third gold and fourth overall medal in the Palau Sant Jordi pool. Silver went to Poland's Radoslaw Kawecki, who was 0.45 seconds behind as he set a European record, while Lochte's team-mate Tyler Clary took bronze. Dane Rikke Moller Pedersen, who on Thursday set the third world record of the competition in the women's 200m breaststroke semi-finals, was beaten in the final by Russian Yulia Efimova, who won in a time of 2:19.41. Pedersen took silver in 2:20.08 - nearly a second slower than in the semi-final, while American Micah Lawrence took bronze. Franklin had more success in the semi-finals of the women's 200m backstroke, as she qualified for Saturday's final with the fastest time. The 18-year-old swam a 2:06.46, 0.69 faster than Canadian Hilary Caldwell. American Elizabeth Pelton had the third-fastest time. Lochte also had a second swim in the session, coming first in his semi-final for the 100m butterfly. His time of 51.48 was the fastest of all swimmers. The two final medals of the evening went to Hungarian Daniel Gyurta, who set a championship record in 2:07.23, beating German Marco Koch by 1.31 seconds. Koch's time of 2:08.54 gave the underperforming German side their first medal in the swimming competition at this year's championships. Matti Mattsson gave Finland an unexpected medal, as he took bronze - 1.72 behind Gyurta. Lochte secured his second gold medal of the night with the US 4x200m freestyle team. The US won in 7:01.72, beating Russia by 2.20 seconds. The bronze went to China in 4.74. South African Chad le Clos, who stunned American superstar Michael Phelps in the 200m butterfly at the London Olympics to win gold and won silver in the 100m, had the second-fastest time. He was 0.04 slower than Lochte, while Poland's Konrad Czerniak entered Saturday's final with the third-fastest time. In the men's 50m freestyle semi-finals, Olympic champion Florent Manaudou led the field in 21.37, while Americans Anthony Ervin and Nathan Adrian were 0.05 and 0.23 behind. World record holder Cesar Cielo, who won the 50m butterfly, tied for the third-fastest time.
