Hundreds of demonstrators took to the streets of Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo late Thursday, protesting against the regional governments and demanding the release of detainees arrested during previous demonstrations, dpa quoted local media as reporting. In Rio, police units were sent to guard the home of the state governor, Sergio Cabral, the reports said. The demonstrators also demanded to know the whereabouts of a resident of a slum who disappeared after his arrest in mid-July. In Sao Paulo local media reported that several people had been arrested, and a number of others injured. Hundreds of thousands of Brazilians joined protests in June against corruption and the government's economic policies.
