The top U.N. envoy in Somalia on Friday condemned the terrorist suicide attack that occurred in the capital Mogadishu in the vicinity of the airport. According to reports, the blast targeted a convoy belonging to the African Union peacekeeping mission in Somalia and killed civilians. "Unfortunately, such acts of terrorism continue to cause extreme suffering to the civilian population," Nicholas Kay, the U.N. secretary-general's special representative for Somalia, said in a statement. "This heartless attack, especially during the holy month of Ramadan, is another indicator that the extremists have resorted in desperation to instilling fear," Kay said. "The Somali people have rejected their violence and opted for peace and progress."
