ECB chief Mario Draghi said Thursday that the bank planned to keep key interest rates at their present or lower level for "an extended period of time", dpa reported. The ECB's move to join other major central banks in introducing a new forward guidance policy followed signs of subdued inflationary pressures, Draghi told a press conference. He said the move would "inject a downward bias for interest rates". But Draghi declined to spell out how long the bank meant by an extended period of time.
