Russia partnership, UPI quoted the U.S. Energy Department as announcing Monday. The U.S. Nuclear Security Administration said it has monitored the removal of nearly 524 tons of highly enriched uranium from Russia under the joint Megatons to Megawatts nuclear non-proliferation program. It added, with that milestone, deliveries of Russian-produced, low-enriched uranium from the former Soviet Union state are 95 percent complete. Under the agreement between the two countries, Russia converts high-enriched uranium from dismantled nuclear weapons to low-enriched uranium. The uranium is delivered to the United States to be converted into nuclear fuel for power plants, and the resulting electricity is 10 percent of all electricity generated in the United States, an Energy Department statement said.
