The centuries-old Riga Castle, normally the seat of the Latvian president, has been damaged by a fire that took hold in a large section of roof. State fire services spokeswoman Viktorija Sembele said no-one was believed to have been injured in the blaze at the castle, which is undergoing renovations. Witnesses said large sections of the roof had been engulfed and that several fire engines attempted to bring the flames under control. The army was also asked to help with a helicopter capable of dropping water from the nearby River Daugava.
