The Taliban said Tuesday that they would open a "political office" in Qatar's capital, Doha, to conduct peace talks on Afghanistan, dpa reported. The office would "support a peaceful and political solution that would ensure an end to the Afghanistan invasion, strengthen an independent and Islamic system as well as bring real security that is the hope of the entire nation," Zabihullah Mujahid, the militants' spokesman, said in a statement. The aim of the office would be to improve understanding and relations with the rest of the world, he said, adding that talks were planned with the United Nations, international and regional organizations, and non-governmental agencies. Mujahid also said the office would organize a meeting with the Afghans, meaning the government in Kabul, "in a certain time frame."
