The death toll in Bangladesh's worst-ever industrial disaster rose to 1,127 with rescuers preparing to end their operation at the site of an eight-storey building that collapsed last month near Dhaka, officials said Monday. In a 20-day operation, the rescue crew drawn from the army, firefighting units and the Red Crescent have pulled out 2,438 survivors from the rubble of Rana Plaza, dpa reported. The building housing five garment factories, a bank and shops collapsed on April 24 in Savar, 25 kilometres north-west of Dhaka. The army-led rescue operation will be wrapped up on Tuesday, Colonel Sajal Shaykhuzzaman said.
