The death toll from armed attacks blamed on separatist rebels in Indonesia's Papua province has risen to 12, police said Friday. According to dpa, eight soldiers and four civilians were killed when gunmen attacked security forces in two separate locations in Puncak Jaya district on Thursday, national police spokesman Agus Rianto said. Five people were also wounded, he said. On Friday, gunmen fired on a military helicopter trying to collect the bodies of the dead soldiers in the Sinak area, injuring a crew member and forcing it to abort the mission, the state Antara news agency said, quoting a military spokesman.
