International Syria envoy Lakhdar Brahimi said Friday that a quick solution to the Syrian conflict was not on the horizon, after talks in Geneva with top US and Russian diplomats. According to dpa, the meeting between Brahimi, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov and US Deputy Secretary of State William Burns took place as opposition activists said rebels in Syria captured a major air base. "We are all very, very deeply aware of the immense suffering of the Syrian people, which has gone on for far too long," Brahimi said in an official statement, speaking also on behalf of Bogdanov and Burns. "And we all stressed the need for a speedy end to the bloodshed, destruction and all forms of violence in Syria," the UN-Arab envoy added, However, he also told reporters: "If you ask me if a solution is around the corner, I'm not sure that is the case." He made clear that the talks did not produce more than the call to end the violence, even though ideas about a political transition were discussed.
