Four firefighters were shot-two fatally-after apparently being lured to an early-morning fire Monday in Webster, New York, a lakefront town about 20 kilometers northeast of Rochester, officials said. The suspected shooter also died at the scene, the town's police chief, Gerald Pickering said, though it was unclear if he was killed by a self-inflicted gunshot or by authorities. “It does appear that it was a trap that was set," Pickering said of the fire that drew the firefighters. “Causative reasons, we don't have at this time." The firefighters were from the West Webster Fire Department, about seven kilometers from the blaze, and were believed to be volunteers. “These people get up in the middle of the night to go put out fires," Pickering said. “They don't expect to be shot and killed." New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said state officials were working with local officials on the incident. “New York's first responders are true heroes as they time and again selflessly rush toward danger in order to keep our families and communities safe," he said.
