A judicial probe into British press ethics called Thursday for tougher self-regulation, backed by law, after a scandal over phone hacking which "wreaked havoc with the lives of innocent people." In his scathing report, Lord Justice Leveson condemned "decades of outrageous behaviour" by newspapers that were "reckless in prioritizing sensational stories" irrespective of the harm they did, dpa reported. To curb the excesses, Leveson, a retired judge, urged the government to introduce legislation for a "genuinely independent and effective system of self-regulation" of the British press. -- SPA
