AlQa'dah 16, 1433, Oct 2, 2012, SPA -- At least 148 people died in the recent flooding in Nigeria, dpa cited the Nigeria Red Cross Society as saying on Tuesday. "The severe flooding (also) displaced 64,000 people across 21 of the country's 36 States", the Head of Communication, Nwankpa Nwankpa, said. Torrential downpours in recent weeks have caused widespread destruction and forced many families into make shift camps. "An estimated 134,000 people have now been affected by the floods and concern is growing about the spread of water borne diseases such as cholera" Nwankpa added. The Red Cross and Red Crescent are now appealing for a million dollars, in order to provide relieve at least 10,000 displaced people in Nigeria. Flooding has become an increasingly common feature, with torrential rains in many parts of Nigeria. More than 30 died in June when two communities were submerged in the north central state of Plateau.
