Japanese government ministers Friday decided to target the complete phasing-out of atomic power in the 2030s, dpa cited a media report as saying. The decision came against a background of increased public concern caused by last year's nuclear disaster in north-east Japan, the Kyodo News agency reported. Three reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station went into meltdown following the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami, leading to radiation leaks and widespread evacuations. Before the crisis, atomic power provided around 30 per cent of Japan's energy needs.
