The United States on Tuesday congratulated Hassan Sheikh Mohamud for his election as president of the Federal Republic of Somalia and said it looked forward to working with him. “This presidential election was the final step in the roadmap to end the transition, which marks the end of the Transitional Federal Government in Somalia," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said Tuesday. “It's also a hopeful sign of a new era of Somali governance." “This, combined with the continued security gains by the African Union mission in Somalia, AMISOM, and the Somalia national forces, presents new opportunities to assist with Somalia stabilization," Nuland told reporters. “There is a lot of work still to do in Somalia. So we will continue to invest in Somalia's success," Nuland said.
