The representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Jordan Andrew Harper said today that the organization has initiated the implementation of the second phase of the Zataari camp in northern Jordan to accommodate ten thousand new refugees, bringing the capacity of the camp by the end of this year (2012) to 70,000 refugees. Harper said in a press statement today: "The number of Syrian refugees who have signed or are in the process of registration with the Commission is nearing 50,000 people. The UNHCR began accommodating the refugees in Zataari camp in Mafraq Governorate near the Jordanian-Syrian border with a capacity of between 5,000 and 7,000 Syrian refugees." The number of Syrian refugees in Jordan now stands at about 170,000 refugees.
