Lakhdar Brahimi, the newly-appointed U.N.-Arab League special envoy to Syria, will meet with U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in New York Friday, Ban's spokesman Martin Nesirky told a news briefing Thursday. Brahimi succeeds Kofi Annan as the international mediator tasked with finding a solution to the crisis in Syria, which is now in its eighteenth month and has claimed 18,000 lives, according to the U.N. Brahimi will be based in New York, Nesirky said.
