The latest wave of violence in Mexico has left around 100 people dead in gang violence over the past two days, dpa reported. The daily Reforma reported Saturday that in 20 of Mexico's 31 states, people were murdered, kidnapped or died in clashes between gangs and the security forces over the past 48 hours. One of the centres of the violence was the so-called Tierra Caliente ("hot land"), in particular the towns of Holanda, Nueva Italia and Apatzingan in the western state of Michoacan. There, gangsters blocked streets with cars and buses, some of which they set on fire, in order to hinder the progress of security forces pursuing them. Over the past five years, more than 50,000 people have been killed in Mexico in incidents linked to organized crime.
