Annan Resigns as U.N.-Arab League Envoy for Syria

Kofi Annan is resigning as joint U.N.-Arab League special envoy for Syria at the end of the month, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced Thursday.
"Mr. Annan has informed me, and the secretary-general of the League of Arab States, Mr. Nabil El Araby, of his intention not to renew his mandate when it expires on 31 August 2012," Ban said in a statement.
