Power supplies were largely restored in India late Tuesday after its worst-ever blackout, which left hundreds of millions of people across more than half the country without electricity, according to dpa. The blackout, that lasted for well over 10 hours, began at 1:04 pm(0734 GMT), and affected 19 northern, eastern and north-eastern states as well as the capital, New Delhi, paralyzing railway and road transport. In a statement late Tuesday the state-run Power Grid Corp. which controls the country's transmission network, said electricity had been fully restored in New Delhi and the north-eastern region. Power had also been restored in up to 82 per cent in the northern region, and 65 per cent in the eastern region, it said. Officials said the power grid serving the north of the country had collapsed in the afternoon, following a similar shutdown Monday disrupted transport services and water supplies. -- SPA
