At least 42 people were killed when a bus skidded off the road and plunged into a canal in Nepal on Sunday, police said. The accident occurred in Nawalparasi district, some 270 kilometres south of the capital, Kathmandu. Police said 42 bodies had been pulled out of the Gandak canal. No identities had been established, dpa reported. Nearly 50 people were rescued alive; some in critical condition. Police took the driver into custody for interrogation. Police said the bus may have been carrying over 100 passengers. Army and police officers were deployed for rescue work.
