The United Nations and humanitarian aid partners on Thursday called for 193 million dollars to meet the growing needs of Syrians who have fled a conflict there and have taken refuge in Turkey, Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq. According to dpa, the new appeal was necessary because of daily arrivals of Syrian refugees, who now number more than 96,000 in the hosting countries. An appeal in March called for 84 million dollars, however that amount has since proven insufficient for the needs at hand. Panos Moumtzis, the regional coordinator for Syrian refugees from the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, said: "It is essential that the international community steps up its support for relief operations for refugees."
