Turkmenistan's drug control agency says it has destroyed 1400 pounds (635 kilograms) of illicit narcotics intercepted on its borders. Representatives of diplomatic missions and international organizations attended the ceremonial incineration Tuesday, which takes place twice a year. The drugs destroyed consisted mainly of opium, but also included heroin and hashish, according to a report of the Associated Press. President Gurnbanguli Berdymukhamedov has stepped up the government's fight against drug trafficking since he came to power in late 2006. Berdymukhamedov has made healthy lifestyles a central theme of his leadership.
