Tunisia has extradited former Libyan prime minister Baghdadi al-Mahmoudi back to Libya to face trial, the country's official TAP news agency reported Sunday. Al-Mahmoudi, who was late Moammar Gaddafi's last prime minister, arrived Sunday in Tripoli, TAP reported, quoting presidential sources. The justice ministry said in May that his extradition would take place "within weeks," after receiving assurances from Libya that he would not be mistreated and would be given a fair trial. The extradition is the first of a senior former Libyan regime member. Al-Mahmoudi was prime minister from 2006 until Gaddafi's overthrowing August last year. He had been in detention in Tunisia since September, when he was arrested on charges of illegally entering the country while fleeing Libya. He was freed shortly afterwards, only to be rearrested after Libya issued a warrant for his arrest.
