Egyptians took to the streets in major cities, particularly flooding Tahrir Square in Cairo, to celebrate the win of Mohammed Morsi as Egypt's first freely elected president. Once announced on the official media by the National Elections Committee, the news spread throughout the country as an auger well for millions who opted to take part in the presidential elections that brought Ahmed Shafiq second in a run-off, Egypt's first following the overthrow of Hosni Mubarak. Morsi, an engineering professor, was arrested three days after a popular revolt against Mubarak erupted on January 25, 2011. Released after Mubarak rule's fall, Morsi became the head of the Freedom and Justice party.
