U.S. stocks made a comeback Friday, a day after slow growth and bank downgrades sent them downward. The dollar fell against the euro and the pound, but gained versus the yen. Light sweet crude oil for August delivery rose $1.56 to $79.76 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Gold futures gained $1.40 to $1,566.90 an ounce. The Dow and S&P 500 both ended the week lower, while the Nasdaq rose for a third straight week. On Friday, the Dow Jones industrial average gained 67.21, or 0.53 percent, to 12,640.78. The broader Standard & Poor's 500 index moved up 9.51, or 0.72 percent, to 1,335.02. The technology-heavy Nasdaq composite index rose 33.33, or 1.17 percent, to 2,892.42.
