Twin earthquakes shook northern Afghanistan on Monday, killing two people and injuring 16, an official said. According to dpa, the quakes of 5.4 and 5.6 magnitude respectively, took place in a 30-minute period, according to the US Geological Survey, rattled mountainous areas in the north and were also felt in the capital Kabul. "More than 30 houses were destroyed in a landslide caused by the tremors in Burka district of Baghlan province," said Mahmood Haqmal, the spokesman for the provincial governor. There were unconfirmed reports that a number of villagers were trapped in the rubble in the area of Say-e Hazara in Burka district, he said. "The rescue teams have been dispatched to the area but we cannot make any contact with them because of the lack of a communication tower in the area," he said.
