Aid organizations warned Monday that a humanitarian emergency is developing in South Sudan, where up to 35,000 refugees from Sudan have arrived in the past few weeks, according to dpa. South Sudan now hosts a total of 150,000 refugees from its northern neighbour, the UN refugee agency said in Geneva. "Not only are refugee numbers suddenly much higher, but the condition that many of these people are in is shockingly bad. Some have been eating tree leaves to survive along the way," said Antonio Guterres, the United Nations high commissioner for refugees. People have been fleeing the Blue Nile state where remnants of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement North are fighting government forces. The aid group Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) said water was running out for the new arrivals and urged the UN and other organizations to find suitable locations for hosting the refugees. "We have a real emergency on our hands," said MSF's emergency coordinator Patrick Swartenbroekx.
