Indian forces shot and killed four suspected militants in clashes in Indian-controlled Kashmir on Sunday, while a policeman died in a raid on a home, police said. The police officer and two militants were killed when Indian forces raided a house on the outskirts of the region's main city, Srinagar, said Prabhakar Tripathi, a spokesman for the Central Reserve Police Force. One militant and three officers also were wounded in the gunbattle that lasted several hours, said Tripathi. The army killed two militants during a separate gunbattle in the village of Nariwan, 37 miles (60 kilometers) south of Srinagar, after receiving a tip they were hiding there, said Muneer Khan, a senior police officer. Kashmir is divided between India and Pakistan, but claimed by both. The two countries have fought two wars over the territory.
