Critics liken the process to “putting the sun in the box” and say the whole venture is impractical. The challenge for scientists is to control a 150 million degree-hot soup of hydrogen ions and electrons through the use of powerful and precisely positioned magnetic fields. More recently they have used massive lasers to blast tiny hydrogen-rich pellets until they fuse with one another.
