Faisal, Emir of Makkah, announced Saturday the signing of a SR642 million contract with AECOM for infrastructure works in Jeddah to provide “urgent and permanent solutions” to the threat of floods. Prince Khaled, who chairs the committee tasked with tackling floods and drainage in the Jeddah region, said the project entails management, initial and preparatory engineering works, and supervision for the execution of the project. According to the Emir, the “program has a period of three years, during which works will begin immediately on urgent solutions and will be finished in a period of no more than six months”. AECOM will focus, he said, on main considerations for the “necessary works to protect from flooding with dams and barriers in all the region's valleys and drainage channels in the city, including unplanned residential districts”. Prince Khaled said that execution projects for the works will be put for tender in five months' time.
