JEDDAH: The Saudi Environmental Society celebrated Earth Day 2011 on Saturday, bringing together officials, students, artists and environmental activists for a special conference and exhibition. The event, to highlight the protection of the environment, was held under the patronage of Prince Turki Bin Nasser Bin Abdul Aziz, President of the Presidency of Meteorology and Environment (PME), in cooperation with Dr. Hani Abu Ras, Mayor of Jeddah; and Professor Osama Sadiq Tayeb, President of King Abdulaziz University. Prince Turki Bin Nasser said the Saudi Environmental Society was started to spread awareness about the environment. “Today we are celebrating Earth Day with the rest of the world to show our solidarity with our earth and the world. It's our duty to protect nature … for the benefit of the earth, ourselves and the coming generations,” he said. Prince Turki also praised students for their ideas presented at the exhibition. Dr. Majdah Abu Ras, board member and deputy executive director of the Saudi Environmental Society said it was important to keep the environment clean, including roads, schools and homes. She also highlighted the importance of recycling.
