There is a need to ensure that as many people as possible are drawn into a discussion on the role of women in the upcoming municipal council elections that take place on Sep. 23. This is an important measure to make sure that all sides understand that there is no threat to culture and Islam with the involvement of Saudi women in decision-making positions in this country. In fact the very history of Islam shows how women played decisive roles in all facets of society, including on the battlefield. Having women take up positions on municipal councils can only enrich this country and ensure it develops to its full potential. As government has been pointing out constantly, a knowledge economy is vital for the Kingdom's future – especially a future that will inevitably have to be less dependent on fossil fuels as a source of income. It is the development of its human resources, and that of half the country's population, who are female, that will ensure that this happens. It is not difficult to organize inclusive and nationwide discussions on this matter. This can take place at schools, universities, at the workplace and community centers. Citizens can then express their views openly. There also needs to be awareness campaigns launched with examples of how women are participating quite successfully and effectively in society. This includes Norah Al-Fayez, the first deputy education minister and Dr. Lama Al-Suleiman, the vice-chairman of the Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JCCI). In this campaign it should also be pointed out that there is nothing that prevents women taking up these important positions. Saleh Kamel, the chairman of the JCCI, was quite clear on this issue, as we reported in this newspaper a few months ago. “The current strict segregation almost everywhere in the country between genders is a result of local traditions and does not reflect the tolerance of Islam.” People should also be reminded that there is no law preventing the participation of women as voters and candidates in the upcoming municipal elections. So what is clearly needed is opening public discussion on this matter and allowing people to express their views. In this spirit of openness people may reach consensus on the matter, which will be to the benefit of women and Saudi society in general. __
