CAMPUS WATCH SCHOLARSHIPS
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 13 - 04 - 2011

It is a golden opportunity to experience a new way of life, learn things in a new environment and learn about the wider world. As a graduate of King Abdulaziz University, the King Abdullah Scholarship program is something that I find very exciting. When a student graduates from university with a Bachelor's degree he/she can then apply to the KAS program. This allows them to pursue their studies further – this time in a different university, in a different country.

My journey began in 1996 when I started as a student of Mechanical Engineering Technology (MET). In 1999, I graduated from the Yanbu Industrial College with an associate degree from the MET department. Three years later, I went to the US to finish my undergraduate and graduate education. I did my BA and MA in Mechanical Engineering and Science and then my PhD in Material Engineering and Science. YIC has supported many by helping them continue their higher education abroad.

There are many ways to get college scholarships, and numerous types of organizations can offer them. These scholarships range in amount and qualifications, and some are highly competitive, while others may be fairly easy to obtain. Sometimes financial need is combined with merit, or financial need alone qualifies some students for college scholarships.

Scholarships are basically grants given to students to assist them in achieving their educational goals. Unlike loans, scholarships come from sponsors who have donated a sum of money to help students pay for their dues. But scholarships do not act mainly as financial aids; they also serve as opportunities for students to reach more than they aspire for. Many people think that scholarships are only for the poor and needy, but in fact these grants pave the way towards reaching one's dreams and ambitions.

The goal of a scholarship is to enhance the education of the student. Although getting a good scholarship can be challenging, the rewards of getting it are worth the challenges. It isn't much of a secret that the costs of education have continued to rise in the last 20 years. This has made it harder for students from low-income families to attend college. Therefore, if students are able to get a scholarship that covers their tuition and primary living expenses, they can focus on completing their degree without having to take out loans or get a job.
