NEW DELHI: Sri Lanka pace bowler Lasith Malinga took 5-13 from just 3.4 overs to lead Mumbai Indians to an eight-wicket victory over Delhi Daredevils Sunday, while new franchise Pune Warriors opened with a seven-wicket win over Kings XI Punjab in the Indian Premier League. Man-of-the-Match Malinga dismissed David Warner for one, Venugopal Rao for 26 and Unmukt Chand, Morne Morkel and Ashok Dinda for ducks to skittle the hosts for 95 in 17.4 overs in the day/night game. Skipper Sachin Tendulkar then struck a patient 46 not out to give 2010 finalist Mumbai Indians a winning start to the new season. The visitors scored 99 for two with 19 balls remaining. On a day dominated by pacers, Warriors new-ball pair of South African Alfonso Thomas and Shrikant Wagh shared five wickets to restrict Kings XI Punjab to 112 for eight in 20 overs to set up a seven-wicket win in Mumbai. Malinga, who lit up the World Cup with his speed and swing, dismissed Warner with a yorker and bowled Chand with a full length delivery in the space of three deliveries in the second over of the innings after Daredevils chose to bat first. An aggressive Virender Sehwag fell for 19 to a direct hit by Tendulkar, while Australian Aaron Finch was caught at deep square leg by Ambati Rayudu off Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh as the visitors took a firm grip on the match at 40 for 4 after seven overs. Mumbai Indians lost South African Davy Jacobs early, bowled for one by countryman Morne Morkel, but Tendulkar anchored the innings in style. Tendulkar, who brought up the winning runs with a boundary off left-arm seamer Irfan Pathan, put on 30 runs for the second wicket with Ambati Rayudu (14) and 68 for the unbroken third wicket with Rohit Sharma (27).
