JEDDAH: Over 100 male temporary literacy teachers across the country want the authorities to employ them in permanent jobs, like female teachers. They want officials to form a committee to look into their employment. They said this is in line with the recent Royal Decrees which stipulate that all civil servants, including temporary teachers, must be given permanent jobs. Okaz/Saudi Gazette reporters have not been able to contact officials to comment on the issue. The teachers said they had signed contracts with the education administrations in various regions to teach illiterate adults the basic principles of writing, reading and arithmetic. They said they tried to approach the officials at the Ministry of Civil Services in Jeddah but were prevented from doing so by security guards. They claimed that officials had told them earlier they were exempted from the previous Royal Order issued in 2005 for the employment of adult education teachers. However, a recent Royal Decree issued by King Abdullah, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, calls for them to be employed permanently. The temporary teachers said that if the Ministry of Education ignores their demands, they will take legal action.
