DAMMAM: The Eastern Province Municipality's annual spring festival and flower show, which began last week has been extended for one more week because of huge public demand. The spring festival is a major attraction for thousands of families visiting the Dammam Corniche.
One of the organizers told Saudi Gazette that this was done because of the holidays and good weather.
The festival was inaugurated by Engineer Daifullah Al-Othaibi, Mayor of the Eastern Province, at King Abdullah Park at the Dammam beachfront. This is the twelfth consecutive year the two shows have been running.
More than 3,000 varieties of plants, shrubs, bushes, flowers and gardening materials are on display at the exhibition.
Maha, a Saudi woman who came to the festival with her children, said that she was attracted to the variety of flowers and plants and was going to buy some to take home. She said the festival also helps to create awareness about caring for the environment.
Abdul Karim, another visitor, said: “The jasmine plant I bought at last year's festival is still producing flowers this year. I purchased five varieties of indoor plants which are cheaper and better quality than the market,” said Abdul Karim.
The exhibition is also showcasing the latest agricultural tools and has relevant information on irrigation, protection of the environment, date palm cultivation methods, harmful pests and insects which attack the crops.
More than 50 different plants, gardening, landscaping companies, agricultural and horticultural companies are participating in the festival. There are also institutions specializing in ornamental plants, gardening supplies and cosmetics, toys and home gardens.
In addition, the festival includes various cultural programs, activities, competitions, dental and health awareness programs and entertainment programs for families and children.
This year many government agencies are also participating in the event, including the health department of the Eastern Province, with awareness campaigns for diabetics and those with blood pressure problems. The shows end on April 14. It starts at 4.30 P.M. and closes at 10 P.M. daily.
