Canucks clinch Presidents' Trophy
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 02 - 04 - 2011

VANCOUVER: Christian Ehrhoff scored the go-ahead goal in the second period and the Canucks won their first Presidents' Trophy for the NHL's best record with a 3-1 victory over the Los Angeles Kings Thursday night.
Daniel Sedin leveled the score with 5 minutes left in the second period, then got his NHL-leading 100th point of the season by setting up Ryan Kesler's goal on a two-man advantage with 4:26 remaining in the third.
Roberto Luongo made 18 saves to help the Canucks win their fifth straight game and 12th in the last 13.
Vancouver, which is celebrating its 40th season, has a team-record 113 points (52-17-9), 11 more than the second-place Philadelphia. The Flyers, who lost 1-0 to Atlanta, only have five games left and can't catch the Canucks.
Capitals 4, Blue Jackets 3, OT: In Washington, Jason Chimera tapped in a rebound 2:30 into overtime for Washington.
The Capitals capitalized on a 3-on-2 rush in the extra period, resulting in a shot from Brooks Laich that goalie Steve Mason couldn't handle. The rebound went right to Chimera, who scored to give Washington its 12th win in March. John Carlson, Mike Knuble and Jason Arnott also scored for Washington.
The Capitals reached 101 points with the win, crossing the 100-point mark for the third straight season, and moved within a point of Philadelphia for the Eastern Conference lead.
Thrashers 1, Flyers 0: At Philadelphia, Chris Mason stopped 43 shots for his first shutout of the season as Atlanta beat Philadelphia.
Nik Antropov scored the only goal midway through the third period. Philadelphia had a chance to get the equalizer late in the third, but Mason made a kick save off his left leg and Jeff Carter's quick rebound knocked off the post with 4.7 seconds left.
The Flyers have lost five straight at home.
Lightning 2, Penguins 1: In Tampa, Florida, Martin St. Louis scored his 30th goal of the season to help Tampa Bay clinch its first playoff berth since 2007 with a victory over Pittsburgh.
Sharks 6, Stars 0: In San Jose, California, Antti Niemi made 29 saves for his sixth shutout of the season and Patrick Marleau scored twice as San Jose routed Dallas to clinch a playoff spot.
Islanders 6, Rangers 2: At Uniondale, New York, Radek Martinek and P.A. Parenteau both had a goal and assist as the Islanders defeated their city rivals, the Rangers.
Maple Leafs 4, Bruins 3, SO: In Boston, Nazem Kadri scored the only shootout goal to help Toronto beat Boston.
Predators 3, Avalanche 2: In Denver, Pekka Rinne made 27 saves and Nashville beat Colorado for its ninth victory in 11 games.
Wild 4, Oilers 2: In St. Paul, Minnesota, Niklas Backstrom ended a six-start winless streak as Minnesota topped Edmonton.
Senators 4, Panthers 1: In Sunrise, Florida, Colin Greening scored twice in the second period and Craig Anderson made 37 saves to lead Ottawa.
