World Cup sponsorship, prize money

MUMBAI: India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh are co-hosting the 10th edition of the Cricket World Cup. We take a look at the commercial development of the tournament since it was first held in 1975.
1975: Hosts: England.
Trophy: 47 cm high, 2.5 kg sterling silver trophy. Sponsored by Prudential Assurance Company (100,000 pounds). Total prize money: 9,000 pounds (9% of sponsorship money).
Winner: West Indies (4,000 pounds).
1979: Hosts: England.
Lower crowd attendance due to a wet summer; ticket prices had more than doubled from 1975.
Sponsored by Prudential Assurance Company (250,000 pounds). Prize Money: 25,900 pounds (just over 10% of sponsorship money).
Winner: West Indies (10,000 pounds).
1983: Hosts: England.
Sponsored by Prudential Assurance Company (500,000 pounds). Prize money: 66,200 pounds (approx 13.5% of sponsorship).
Winner: India (20,000 pounds).
1987: Hosts: India and Pakistan.
Trophy: Gold plated cup, studded at the top with diamonds and flags of all participating nations embossed all round.
Sponsors: Reliance Industries (2.17 million pounds). Gross earnings: 7 million pounds in earnings. Prize money: 99,300 pounds (approx 4.5% of sponsorship).
Winner: Australia (30,000 pounds).
1992: Hosts: Australia and New Zealand.
Trophy: Waterford crystal globe. Sponsors: Benson and Hedges (3 million pounds). Prize money: 118,000 pounds (approx 4% of sponsorship).
Winner: Pakistan (20,500 pounds).
Player of the tournament: Martin Crowe (New Zealand) won a Nissan 300 car.
1996: Hosts: India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
Sponsors: Wills (8 million pounds). Television rights: World Tel for 13.8 million pounds.
Everything – stadium advertising rights, hoardings, sightscreens, airline and hotel partners, computer and photography partners, hospitality tents – had a price tag associated to it.
Prize money: 200,000 pounds (approx 2.5 percent of sponsorship). Trophy: 70 cm sterling silver trophy.
Winner: Sri Lanka (30,000 pounds) Player of the Tournament: Sanath Jayasuriya (Sri Lanka) won an Audi 4 car.
1999: Hosts: England.
Trophy: 60 cm, 11 kg, silver and gilt cup, featuring a golden globe held by three silver columns. Became the permanent trophy.
Sponsors: Emirates, Natwest, Pepsi, Vodafone (11 million pounds). Television rights: 23 million pounds. Prize money: 600,000 pounds (approx 5% of sponsorship money).
Winner: Australia (180,000 pounds) Player of the tournament: Lance Klusener (South Africa) won a Daewoo Musso car.
2003: Hosts: South Africa, Zimbabwe, Kenya.
Sponsors: Global Cricket Corporation (GCC) won the rights for 2003 and 2007 World Cups, and put in $550m for the two World Cups, including television rights (approximately 170 million pounds for each World Cup). Prize money: 3 million pounds (approx 1.4% of sponsorship).
Winner: Australia (1.2 million pounds). Player of the tournament: Sachin Tendulkar (India) won a golden bat.
2007: Hosts: West Indies.
Sponsors: Global Cricket Corporation (GCC). Prize money: 3 million pounds (approx 1.4% of sponsorship)
Winner: Australia (1.4 million pounds). Player of the tournament: Glenn McGrath (Australia) won a diamond studded cricket ball.
2011: Hosts: India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh.
Sponsors: ESPN have secured television rights (2 billion pounds) with event to be telecast in 220 countries. Prize money: 6 million pounds. Winner: 1.9 million pounds.
