Is it permissible to invoke Allah's curse against a person who drinks khamr (wine)? A- This is not permissible. It has been narrated on the authority of Omar (may Allah be pleased with him), that during the lifetime of the Prophet (peace be upon him) there was a man called Abdullah, and he used to make the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) smile. The Prophet (peace be upon him) administered lashing to him because of drinking khamr. One day, he was brought to the Prophet (peace be upon him) on the same charge and was lashed. To that, a man among the people said, “May Allah curse him! How frequently he has been brought (to the Prophet on such a charge)!” The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, ‘Do not curse him, for by Allah, I know he loves Allah and His Messenger.” It has been narrated on the authority of Abu Huraira, who said, “A drunkard was brought to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and the Prophet (peace be upon him) ordered that he should be beaten (lashed). Some of us beat him with their hands, some with their shoes, and some with their garments (folded in the form of a lash). When that man had left, a man, said, “What is wrong with him? May Allah disgrace him!” The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said,: Do not help Satan against your (Muslim) brother.” And Allah knows best. – Extracted from 500 Questions and Answers on Islamic Jurisprudence, compiled and translated by Muhammad Abdul
