RIYADH: The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) has assured consumers that all imported food from Japan is radiation-free and that plans are in place to check all imports from that country. This announcement comes in the wake of concerns about contaminated food products after the leakage of radioactive substances from a tsunami-hit nuclear reactor. All food imported before the disaster two weeks ago is safe, the SFDA said in a statement. The SFDA has reaffirmed that it examines all food products imported from Japan. It is working with the relevant international organizations and neighboring countries on the matter. It has reiterated that it will not allow entry of any contaminated food products. The authority applies the same measures to imported medicines and medical supplies. Some reports indicated that the Japanese authorities have discovered high levels of radiation in raw milk produced in the Japanese Fukushima region, including spinach and green onions produced in Ibaraki County.
