JEDDAH: The Secretary General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, has called upon the body's member countries to back the National Transition Council in Libya. Ihsanoglu welcomed UN Security Council Decision 1973 issued Thursday and its stipulations for measures to halt aggression against the Libyan people. Speaking at the opening of the urgently held meeting of foreign ministers of the seven-member executive committee that was convened Friday to discuss developments in Libya, Ihsanoglu said the use of excessive force against civilians in Libya called into question the legitimacy of the regime. The secretary general also called for “collective Islamic work” under the OIC to “avoid a humanitarian crisis in the east and west of Libya” where he described the situation as “still serious”, and urged all to “act immediately to get urgent humanitarian support to the Libyan people”.
