Red Wings edge Caps to end streak
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 18 - 03 - 2011

DETROIT: Henrik Zetterberg scored his second goal of the game with 10:07 remaining as the Detroit Red Wings ended the Washington Capitals' nine-game winning streak with a 3-2 victory Wednesday.
With the game level at 2-2 and Detroit on a power play, Zetterberg flipped the puck on net from a severe angle to goalie Michal Neuvirth's left. Neuvirth appeared to have his near post covered, but the puck went past his glove and into the net. Valtteri Filppula added a goal for Detroit, and Brian Rafalski, who hadn't played since Feb. 24 because of a back injury, had three assists.
Alex Ovechkin and John Carlson scored for Washington, which missed a chance to move past Philadelphia into first place in the Eastern Conference.
Canucks 4, Avalanche 2: At Vancouver, British Columbia, Alex Burrows equalized midway through the third period and Henrik Sedin put Vancouver ahead 2:18 later as the Canucks rallied to clinch a playoff spot.
Henrik added a second goal into an empty net with 1:14 left as the NHL-leading Canucks won their seventh straight game to become the first team to secure a playoff berth.
Maxim Lapierre also scored and rookie Cory Schneider made 27 saves to help Vancouver wrap up the Northwest Division, and with it a top-three playoff seeding in the Western Conference.
Daniel Sedin added two assists to extend his lead in the NHL scoring race with 92 points.
Erik Johnson and Matt Duchene scored goals 1:27 apart in the first period for Colorado.
Ducks 2, Blues 1: At Anaheim, California, Jason Blake scored two goals and Ray Emery made 30 saves in his first start for Anaheim as the Ducks beat St. Louis to climb into an eighth-place tie in the Western Conference.
Blake scored the tiebreaking goal early in the third period of the Ducks' sixth victory in eight games, pulling them even with Calgary. Anaheim has two games in hand on the Flames, who visit Honda Center Sunday.
Nathan Oystrick scored and Jaroslav Halak stopped 22 shots for the Blues, who opened a four-game trip with their ninth loss in 13 games.
The loss capped an unsettling day for the Blues after Chairman Dave Checketts announced the franchise is for sale.
Maple Leafs 3, Hurricanes 1: At Raleigh, North Carolina, defenseman Dion Phaneuf had two power-play goals and added an assist, and rookie James Reimer made 36 saves in Toronto's victory over Carolina.
Toronto is 10th in the Eastern Conference, two points behind ninth-place Carolina and four back of eighth-place Buffalo for the final playoff spot.
Phaneuf broke a tie with 9:09 left in the second period, then helped set up Tyler Bozak's goal 12 seconds later.
Coming off a 6-2 home loss to Tampa Bay on Monday night, Toronto is 5-0-2 in its last seven road games. Chad LaRose scored for Carolina.
