Marjan District of Jeddah has confessed to giving birth and burying the fetus in the garden at her sponsors' house, after police removed the newborn from a shallow grave at the site Monday. The discovery was made after the sponsor's wife returned home to find the housemaid bleeding, with the latter claiming she had cut herself with a knife. The wife and her husband took the woman to a medical center, however, where doctors revealed that the maid had “performed an abortion on herself”. Doctors said that the woman had begun to hemorrhage at the time of the fetus' birth, prompting the couple call the police and return home in search of the fetus. Officers arriving at the scene found the new born baby buried in a shallow grave in the garden. Police are seeking to establish if the child was alive at the time of birth. The maid, who is currently in intensive care in hospital, reportedly told police that she had had an illegal relationship with a driver of the same nationality. He has already left the country, she told them. “The maid has confessed to carrying out an abortion on herself, and burying the newborn at the house,” said Misfir Al-Ju'aid, spokesman for Jeddah Police.
