JEDDAH: The Administrative Investigations Department in Makkah Region is investigating six contractors assigned to execute flood-related projects and will impose penalties on them if they are found to have violated contract terms or carried out shoddy work, sources told Okaz/Saudi Gazette. Sources said the department has asked the Jeddah Mayoralty for copies of contracts with contractors who were assigned projects to expand drainage canals in Umm Al-Khair Planned District, construct dams in Qows Valley, fill large potholes in eastern Jeddah, re-asphalt and pave Jack Street, deal with the high level of the entrance to Jack Street, remove earth dykes along Jack Street and expand canals for draining water behind Umm Al-Khair District Dam. Requested documents include copies of work licenses for the contracting companies and all related transactions and procedures at Jeddah Mayoralty, according to sources. Investigations are under way, sources suggested, based on contracts signed between the contractors and the Jeddah Mayoralty, and officials are considering penalties and other measures against contractors due to their foot-dragging in completing the projects and lack of compliance with solutions proposed to guarantee their efficiency. These proposals had been assigned to several contractors, but they were tardy in carrying out their work, which forced the Jeddah Mayoralty to fine them, withdraw the projects and assign them to other contractors, according to sources.
