RIYADH: Two persons have been arrested here Thursday for hurling stones at a Traffic Police car parked alongside a Saher mobile camera vehicle. Police said that the two “young men” targeted the vehicles parked on Khadija Bint Khuwailid Road, and as they passed in their own car launched the attack before speeding off. “Investigators tracked down and detained the culprits and they are currently due to be handed over to the authorities concerned,” police said. Saher traffic cameras have been the target of public ire in many of the regions where they have been installed. Only last Monday unidentified vandals smashed a camera in Khamis Mushayt, with eyewitness saying that a “group of youths” stopped their car and began hurling stones and rocks at the device before driving off. Despite successfully reducing death rates from motor accidents, critics say the automated fining system frequently issues penalties against innocent vehicle owners and not the actual user guilty of the offense.
