RIYADH: An ambulance was rushed to Tajmeea Al-Ma'adan, a scrapyard site in the capital, Monday noon after reports that a worker there collapsed on the ground with apparent injuries to his back. Two police cars and a paramedic helicopter also arrived at the scene. But before any medical aid could be given, the worker had succumbed to his injuries. Police and paramedics searched for signs that could lead to the cause of the death. Later, a senior police official at the site told Saudi Gazette, “We cannot pass on any information at the moment.” The nationality of the worker is still not known. The Al-Ma'adan scrapyard was set up two years ago to rehabilitate and relocate all the scrapyards in the capital. Mohammed Haroon, operations manager at one of the neighboring scrap recycling plant who was at the site of the incident said: “This zone is about 75 km from Riyadh city. Though there are more than a thousand people working or visiting the area daily, there are no electricity, water, sewage or garbage facilities.” The scrapyard where the worker died Monday had no name but is claimed to be belonging to Syed Al-Amoudi Company for Scrap. Despite the fact that it is a large yard spread over more than 10,000 sq. meters, there was no supervisor at the site. The deceased did not seem to have a helmet or any safety equipment on him. The cause of death is still unclear.
