Flyhalf Daniel Carter scored a try and added 17 points from the boot to propel New Zealand to a 37-20 win over England in a rugby international on Saturday. Carter converted his own try and further scores from Conrad Smith, Mils Muliaina and Sitiveni Sivivatu and also added three penalties in a comfortable All Blacks victory at Eden Park. Winger Topsy Ojo scored two tries on his England debut, on his first two touches of the ball, the first from an interception and the second off a speculative kick from replacement scrumhalf Danny Care. Olly Barkley converted both tries and added two first half penalties for England. The second and final match takes place in Christchurch next Saturday. In Melbourne, Australia beat Ireland 18-12 to give its new coach Robbie Deans a winning start in an entertaining test match on Saturday. Tries by center Berrick Barnes and lock James Horwill carried the Wallabies to a 15-7 lead at halftime and flyhalf Matt Giteau extended the advantage with a penalty. Ireland refused to lie down, however, and a fine try by their captain Brian O'Driscoll gave Australia a few anxious moments before they sealed the win. Irish flanker Denis Leamy was driven over the line for a try in the first half. In Pretoria, Jean de Villiers crossed for two tries, including a crucial five-pointer in the 66th minute, as World Cup winner South Africa rallied to beat Six Nations champion Wales 37-21 Saturday to clinch its international rugby series 2-0. Maori beats Fiji In Fiji, All Blacks lock Jason Eaton scored a second-half try which clinched an 11-7 win for the New Zealand Maori over Fiji in the Pacific Nations Cup on Saturday. Eaton burst the Fiji defense from a lineout midway through the second half to give the Maori an 8-7 lead. A late penalty gave the New Zealand team a four-point margin and it held on as Fiji ended the rain-soaked match poised on the Maori goalline. A rain storm which burst over Lautoka shortly before the kickoff turned Churchill Park into a quagmire as Fiji chased its first win over the New Zealand Maori since 1951.
