Stamkos powers Lightning past Blues
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 09 - 02 - 2011

TAMPA: Vincent Lecavalier scored a power-play goal at 4:53 in overtime and Steven Stamkos scored his NHL-leading 40th goal as the Tampa Bay Lightning beat the St. Louis Blues 4-3 Sunday.
St. Louis defenseman Eric Brewer was called for a holding penalty 3:40 into the extra session, and Lecavalier converted a rebound backhander for his ninth goal of the season, giving Tampa Bay the victory.
Stamkos had three assists, and Dominic Moore and Steve Downie also scored for the Lightning, who have won seven of eight. Stamkos also leads the NHL with 72 points. Patrik Berglund, David Backes and Nikita Nikitin had the St. Louis goals. The Blues have lost 11 of 14.
Devils 4, Canadiens 1: At Montreal, Dainius Zubrus and Ilya Kovalchuk scored 2:52 apart early in the first as New Jersey downed Montreal.
Martin Brodeur got his 615th career win despite leaving after the first period because of a bruised right leg.
Brodeur stopped all 11 shots he faced before he was replaced for the second by Johan Hedberg, who made 14 saves over the final two periods.
Kovalchuk was awarded his second goal of the game at 18:39 of the third when he was hooked on a shot at an empty net that hit the right post. Travis Zajac, who scored in the second, got his second assist of the game on the play.
P.K. Subban got his sixth goal 6:32 into the second, moments after Zajac made it 3-0, to spoil the combined shutout effort.
Capitals 3, Penguins 0: At Washington, Brooks Laich and Marcus Johansson scored as Washington won on Super Bowl Sunday for the eighth straight time. The Capitals snapped the five-game winning streak of their dreaded rival Penguins, who are dealing with a likely season-ending knee injury to Evgeni Malkin and are awaiting Sidney Crosby's return from a concussion.
Pittsburgh's hopes for a Super Sunday double – the Steelers were playing for the NFL title later in the day – were stifled by an improved Washington defense anchored by Michal Neuvirth, who made 22 saves in his first start since Jan. 18.
Mike Knuble added an empty net goal for the Capitals.
